Eight benefits of a homemade UGF filter box

1. 🧬 Excellent biological filtration

One of the main advantages is the large surface area available for beneficial bacteria.

These bacteria help convert:

  • Ammonia: Highly toxic to shrimp.
  • Nitrite: Also toxic and should remain at zero.
  • Nitrate: The end product of the conventional nitrification process, which still needs to be controlled through water changes and plant uptake.

A mature biological filter helps maintain a safer environment for sensitive Caridina shrimp.

2. 💧 More stable water quality

Caridina shrimp are sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry.

A properly established UGF filter box can support a stable biological filtration system by providing additional surfaces for beneficial bacteria.

This is particularly useful in breeding aquariums where you want to maintain consistent conditions for adults, berried females, and shrimplets.

Important: A filter does not automatically stabilize pH, GH, KH, or TDS. These parameters must still be monitored and managed separately.

3. 🦐 Shrimplet-friendly filtration

A homemade filter box can be designed to protect newborn shrimp.

For example, you can use:

  • Fine-pore sponge over water intake openings.
  • Small, protected intake slots.
  • An airlift system with gentle flow.
  • A covered filter compartment that prevents shrimp from entering the main filter chamber.

This reduces the risk of shrimplets being sucked into a pump or trapped inside the filtration system.

Design tip: Make all intake openings small enough to prevent shrimplets from entering, and ensure the protective sponge cannot become blocked easily.

4. 🌿 Encourages biofilm growth

Biofilm is an important natural food source for Caridina shrimp.

It contains communities of microorganisms that shrimp graze on throughout the day.

The surfaces inside a filter box can develop biofilm, providing additional grazing opportunities when accessible to shrimp.

This is especially beneficial in breeding tanks where young shrimp spend much of their time grazing on microscopic food sources.

However, biofilm growth inside a sealed filter compartment is not necessarily accessible to shrimp, so the benefit depends on the design.

5. 🌬️ Improved oxygen circulation

An air-driven UGF system circulates water while introducing air into the aquarium.

Good oxygenation supports:

  • Beneficial bacterial activity.
  • Shrimp respiration.
  • Biological filtration.
  • More uniform water circulation.

For Caridina, gentle and consistent circulation is generally preferable to excessively strong currents.

An air pump can also help maintain gas exchange at the water surface, particularly when the tank is heavily stocked or the room is warm.

6. 🧽 Convenient maintenance

A properly designed filter box can make routine maintenance easier because mechanical filtration and biological media are organized in one accessible compartment.

You can inspect the intake sponge, remove accumulated debris, and service the mechanical media without dismantling the entire aquarium.

To protect the beneficial bacteria:

  • Rinse sponge gently in removed aquarium water.
  • Avoid cleaning all biological media at once.
  • Do not replace every filter component simultaneously.
  • Avoid allowing biological media to dry out during maintenance.

The maintenance interval depends on stocking, feeding, and the amount of debris entering the box.

7. 🏆 Useful for dedicated breeding aquariums

A UGF filter box can be particularly useful for breeding Caridina because it can provide continuous biological filtration without requiring a strong intake current.

It can support a setup focused on:

  • Stable water quality.
  • Lower PH
  • Healthy adult shrimp.
  • Successful moulting.
  • Shrimplet survival.
  • Consistent feeding and maintenance routines
